Depression screening: what the questions are and who should be screened. Here are three things to know. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening adults for depression, including pregnant and postpartum people and adults 65 and older. It applies to adults 19 and older without a mental health diagnosis or recognized signs or symptoms, whether or not they have risk factors. Screening uses a brief questionnaire. Common ones include the Patient Health Questionnaire for adults, the Geriatric Depression Scale for older adults, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale during pregnancy and after birth. A positive screen leads to a fuller assessment, to confirm the diagnosis and see how severe symptoms are. If depression is confirmed, the Task Force says effective treatment generally includes medication, psychotherapy, or both.
