Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is an antidepressant that affects dopamine and norepinephrine, two brain chemicals involved in attention. It is not FDA-approved for ADHD, but it is sometimes used off-label for adults, especially when depression is also present.
What the evidence shows
Studies show a modest benefit for adult ADHD symptoms, smaller than with stimulants. Its strength is treating two conditions with one medicine: depression and ADHD, or depression and smoking.
Who it may suit
- Adults with ADHD and depression
- Adults who want to quit smoking
- Adults who cannot take or prefer to avoid stimulants
- Adults bothered by sexual side effects from SSRIs
Who should avoid it
People with a seizure disorder, an eating disorder such as bulimia or anorexia, or who are stopping alcohol or sedatives abruptly, because bupropion lowers the seizure threshold.
Side effects
Insomnia, dry mouth, headache, jitteriness and lower appetite are common. Take it in the morning, and do not double doses.
