Adult ADHD Evaluation and Treatment in South Carolina
Virtual adult ADHD evaluation, testing and medication management for adults across South Carolina.
Who We Evaluate and Treat
Hope Integrative Medicine provides virtual adult ADHD evaluation and medication management for adults across South Carolina. We treat adults only — if you are seeking evaluation for a child, please contact your child's pediatrician for a referral.
- Inattentive Type — Difficulty sustaining focus, organization, and follow-through without the hyperactivity component
- Hyperactive-Impulsive Type — Restlessness, impulsivity, and difficulty with self-regulation
- Combined Type — Features of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive presentations
- ADHD with Anxiety or Depression — These conditions frequently co-occur in adults; we evaluate and address all presenting conditions
- Late-Diagnosed ADHD — Many adults reach their 30s, 40s, or beyond without a formal evaluation; it is never too late to seek assessment
What the Evaluation Involves
Your first appointment is a comprehensive clinical evaluation, typically 45 to 60 minutes. Your provider takes a detailed history covering attention, organization, impulsivity, academic and work history, and the impact of symptoms on your daily functioning. We discuss your symptom history, prior evaluations or treatments, and any co-occurring conditions. Telehealth ADHD evaluation for adults is well-established and clinically sound.
ADHD Testing
If you have not had a formal ADHD evaluation or testing before, ADHD testing is required before treatment can begin. Testing usually follows an initial evaluation with one of our providers. If your provider finds you may meet criteria for ADHD, you will complete an objective, FDA-cleared, web-based assessment of attention, activity and impulsivity on your own computer, between visits and on your own time. The results give your provider objective information to support an accurate diagnosis and the best treatment recommendations, but on their own they are not enough to diagnose ADHD. The assessment is self-pay and not covered by insurance; when we call to schedule, we can walk you through the cost and answer any questions.
The test is designed to measure the three core symptoms of ADHD in people ages 6 to 60. Attention: during an on-screen task, inattention shows up in variations in how quickly and accurately you respond. Activity: the platform tracks motor activity during the task, which its maker reports measuring to within 1 mm. Impulsivity: incorrect response patterns show how impulsive responses may affect your performance.
At a follow-up visit, your provider goes over the results with you alongside what was learned at your initial evaluation: symptom criteria, your history, how symptoms affect your life, and symptoms across settings, supported by interviews and rating scales. High scores in all three areas do not automatically mean combined-type ADHD, normal activity during testing does not rule ADHD out, and the testing can help inform the ADHD subtype but cannot establish it by itself. If you have insurance, your initial virtual evaluation and follow-up visits may be billed to your plan according to your benefits.
Medications for Adult ADHD
Non-stimulant medications — including atomoxetine (Strattera), extended-release viloxazine (Qelbree), and bupropion — are effective for adult ADHD and can be prescribed via telehealth in South Carolina following a proper evaluation. Atomoxetine and viloxazine are FDA-approved non-stimulants for adults; bupropion is sometimes used off-label, especially when depression is also present. None of them carry the regulatory restrictions of stimulant medications.
Stimulant medications — including amphetamine salts and methylphenidate products — are federally controlled substances subject to specific DEA prescribing requirements for telehealth. When a stimulant is clinically appropriate, our providers prescribe long-acting stimulant medications, such as extended-release amphetamine (Adderall XR), lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) and extended-release methylphenidate (Concerta). We do not prescribe immediate-release stimulants. Prescriptions are sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy.
Telehealth visits are evaluation and management visits. A prescription can be part of your treatment when your provider, using professional judgment and deciding together with you after weighing the risks and benefits, finds it medically necessary. Whether you are seen in person in West Ashley or by telehealth, prescriptions are sent electronically to your pharmacy.
