Statin muscle pain on Lipitor or Crestor: your alternatives. Here are three things to know. Muscle aches are the most common reason people stop a statin such as Lipitor or Crestor. But in blinded trials, muscle symptoms showed up almost as often on placebo. Exercise, low thyroid, low vitamin D and other medicines can also cause aches. Your provider may check a blood test called CK and your thyroid. When a statin is the problem, there are good ways forward to explore with your provider. A short break, then restarting the same or a lower dose, often works. Rosuvastatin and pravastatin are often tolerated when others were not. Stopping cholesterol treatment altogether is rarely the right answer for someone at high heart risk. Non-statin options can help too. Ezetimibe, or Zetia, is a pill that blocks cholesterol absorption. Bempedoic acid, or Nexletol, rarely causes muscle symptoms. Injections such as Repatha and Praluent lower LDL dramatically, usually for people at the highest risk. And severe muscle pain with dark, cola-colored urine needs same-day care.
