Anxiety not improving on your medication? Here are three things to know about the next steps. When anxiety does not improve with the first treatment, it is easy to feel stuck. First, check the basics. Was the dose high enough, for at least six to eight weeks? Was it taken daily? Are sleep problems, caffeine, alcohol or a thyroid problem driving symptoms? Next steps often include another SSRI or an SNRI, such as Effexor XR or Cymbalta. Buspirone is a non-habit-forming daily medicine that can be used alone or added to an SSRI. And cognitive behavioral therapy is as effective as medication for many anxiety disorders. Benzodiazepines work quickly, but daily long-term use brings dependence, memory and balance problems, and difficult discontinuation. Pregabalin is sometimes used when other options have not worked. It is a controlled medicine, and with opioids, alcohol or other sedatives it can cause dangerous breathing problems. Read the full article at hopeintegrativemed.com.
