Preventive Care and Annual Physicals in the Charleston Area
Preventive care for adults in the Charleston area, in person at our West Ashley office and by telehealth.
What Preventive Care Includes
An annual physical or wellness visit with Hope Integrative Medicine covers age- and risk-appropriate screening, a review of your current medications and medical history, lifestyle assessment, and any acute concerns you want to address while you're in. We do not rush through physicals. New patient physicals typically run 45 to 60 minutes; established patient wellness visits run 30 to 45 minutes.
- Vital signs and physical examination — Blood pressure, heart rate, BMI, and a comprehensive physical exam
- Preventive labs — Metabolic panel, lipid panel, HbA1c, CBC, thyroid (when indicated), STI screening (when indicated), and others based on your age, sex, and risk factors
- Cancer screening coordination — Mammography, colorectal cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, lung cancer screening (LDCT for eligible patients), and prostate cancer discussion
- Immunizations — Annual influenza, COVID, Tdap, pneumococcal, shingles (Shingrix), and others based on your vaccination history and age
- Cardiovascular risk assessment — Including discussion of aspirin use, statin therapy, and blood pressure management when appropriate
- Mental health screening — PHQ-9 depression screening and GAD-7 anxiety screening are standard at all wellness visits
Integrated Physical and Mental Health Care
Mental health screening at a physical is standard at Hope Integrative Medicine — not an afterthought. If your PHQ-9 or GAD-7 scores suggest depression or anxiety that warrants follow-up, you don't need a separate referral to a separate practice and a separate wait. Your primary care provider and our psychiatric providers share one chart. Follow-up happens within the same practice, often within a week.
For patients already managing a mental health condition with our psychiatric team, your annual physical is an opportunity to ensure your physical and mental health care are coordinated — medication side effects monitored, metabolic labs reviewed alongside psychiatric medication management.
Prescriptions and Safety
Telehealth visits are evaluation and management visits. A prescription can be part of your treatment when your provider, using professional judgment and deciding together with you after weighing the risks and benefits, finds it medically necessary. Whether you are seen in person in West Ashley or by telehealth, prescriptions are sent electronically to your pharmacy.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, signs of stroke, a severe allergic reaction, or severe abdominal pain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most commercial plans cover one preventive visit per year with no cost-sharing when billed as preventive. Medicare covers a yearly Annual Wellness Visit, a prevention-planning visit, but not a routine physical exam, and problems addressed at the same visit may carry a copay. We accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare, Curative, Ambetter, Medicare, Wellcare Medicare Advantage, and most SC Medicaid plans. Call (843) 737-0312 to verify your specific coverage before your visit.
Yes. Annual physicals and comprehensive wellness exams require an in-person visit for the physical examination component. We offer telehealth for follow-up visits, chronic disease management, and medication management — but physicals are done in person at our West Ashley office at 1064 Gardner Road.
Yes. Existing mental health patients are welcome to establish primary care at Hope Integrative Medicine. Sharing a chart with your psychiatric provider means your physical and mental health care are coordinated from the start — no separate medical records requests, no providers working without the full picture.
Your insurance card, a list of current medications (including vitamins and supplements), your vaccination record if available, and any recent lab results from other providers. If you have specific health concerns you want to address at the visit, write them down beforehand so we make sure to cover everything.
